Case study

Ironmongery For You

An online store for ironmongery, with door handles for the home and the office. We designed a clean navy and blue store, with a full width door lever hero, three offer tiles, a product grid with category and brand lists, latest news and a row of trade brand logos.

The brief

Ironmongery For You sells door handles and other hardware for homes and offices, across doors, windows, outdoors, indoor and storage, from brands such as Atlantic, Carlisle Brass, Fulton and Bray, Hoppe, Versa and Zoo Hardware.

The design had to make a large catalogue easy to browse, put offers and delivery up front, and show the trade brands behind the range.

Header

A centred logo and a deep blue menu

A welcome line with login links sits on the left, the large spaced logo in the centre, and Home, My Account and Wishlist on the right. A search field, a basket total and a blue Checkout button sit underneath, and a deep blue menu bar holds eight links, with the active Home tab in a brighter blue.

Hero

A full width photo of a door lever

A soft focus photo of a door and its handle fills the width. The headline Door lever and a short paragraph sit on the left, a blue More details button follows, and small square dots at the bottom right show that the hero is a slider.

Offers

Three tiles for offers, help and delivery

A white Special offers tile shows a door handle with its price. Beside it, a blue Do it yourself videos tile carries a video icon, and a Free next day delivery tile sits over a photo of a courier. The three tiles share one row directly under the hero.

Shop

Categories, brands and a product grid

An About Ironmongery heading and intro open the section. A narrow sidebar lists categories and brands with item counts, with a photo of a handle and an Explore new set link below. The main area has New, Featured and Bestsellers tabs above a three by three grid of white product cards, each with a name, a blue price and add to basket and wishlist links. One card has a blue border to highlight it.

News

Latest news and tweets

Three posts sit in columns with blue uppercase titles, a small date and category line and a short excerpt. A light blue Tweets panel runs down the right edge with three recent posts, and a blue bar marks one of them.

Brands

A row of trade brand logos

Ten brand logos (Salto, Kaba, Dorgard, Exidor, Dorma, Briton, Codelocks, Geze, Deedlock and Zoo) share one row on a pale grey strip.

Footer

A mailing list band and a deep blue footer

A blue Join our mailing list band sits above the footer, with a wide email field and a dark Subscribe button. The deep blue footer has six columns: Top brands, Categories, Help center, Account, Twitter and Follow us with social squares. A dark bar below carries the copyright and payment icons.

Colour and type

Deep navy carries the menu bar, the footer and the Subscribe button. A stronger royal blue marks the headings, prices, buttons and the active menu tab, and a light sky blue wraps the header and the tweets panel. Green is kept for the add to basket links so they stand out, and the page is white and pale grey.

The logo uses a thin, spaced sans serif in capitals, while headings and body text use a clean sans serif.
